Iran: single-mother families in poverty

Hossein Raghfar, a member of the working group of experts on women and family affairs said on the women’s living conditions in Iran, “The poverty seen in single-mother families in Iran is 1.3 times more than single-father families.”
“Women are suffering serious and structural limitations, and we are witnessing structural restrictions in women’s conditions, which causes much more limited opportunities for women in comparison to men,” he added.
“Poverty amongst women has been 1.3 and 1.4 times more than men in the past few years. Nearly 12% of the country’s families are run by single-mothers, and around 45% of these families are living in in poverty, while this ratio for men is 30%; this means around 1.4 times and in some years 1.5 times more poverty for women in comparison,” Raghfar said providing statistics on poverty amongst men and women.
“In this trend the role of women is much more obvious and as more and more women leave the country it will lead to a major catastrophe. There is no agenda for such issues,” he stressed while shedding light on the role of educated women leaving the country.
